PATIENT’S INSTRUCTIONS
1.For Barium swallow, meal and follow through.
You are supposed to refrain from eating or drinking anything for at
least 8-12 hours prior to the examination. Patient should not smoke
either.
NB: Patients with chronic medical problems and children should contact
the clinic for modifications of the above instructions.
2. Hysterosalpingogram (HCG), cystourettrogram
(CUG), fistulogram and sinogram .
One should not eat or drink anything 4-6 hours prior to the examination.
Inform the nurse or doctor in case of history of allergy or cardiac
disease. For HSG the ideal timing is the 10th day of cycle (i.e. counting
starts from the day the lady starts bleeding, not when she stops!)
3. For Barium enema
Low fiber diet for three days prior to examination.
Laxatives daily for the three days prior to the examination.
Nothing to eat 8-12 hours prior to the examination.
Cleansing enemas an hour or two prior to examination.
At the end of the examination, patient resumes normal diet. In case
of severe diarrhea, the doze of laxatives should be reduced.
Consult your doctor in case you have a chronic medical problem, or if
you are on regular medication including oral contraceptives.
You are also advised to consult us on the dietary advise on what foods
have low fiber.
4. Intravenous pyelogram
Instructions are similar to barium enema and in addition fluid intake
is restricted to 600mls in 24 hours preceding the examination. Remember
to alert the doctor in case of history of allergy or asthma.
5. Pelvic ultrasound scans
For transabdominal ultrasounds scan which is the commonest examination,
a full urinary bladder is a requirement. The patient is advised to drink
about a liter of fluid an hour prior to the examination and do not go
for short call until the examination is done. Special pelvic ultrasound
scans through the rectum or vagina do not require a full urinary bladder.
6. Abdominal ultrasound scans.
For examination of billery system, gall bladder inclusive, fat free
diet for 24 hours and milk orally for 4-6 hours prior to examination
is ideal.
Most patients are asked to drink water an hour prior to an abdominal
scan to enable examination of both the abdomen and pelvis because it
is necessary in most patients.
7. Obstetric ultrasound scans.
For early obstetric scan a full urinary bladder is mandatory but for
late scans, this may not be required. Remember, most of our patients
miss the early scan.
8. CT Scan examination.
Nill orally for 8-12 hours before the examination. Exceptions to the
rule are children, emergencies and diabetes. Some CT examinations do
not require any special investigations so you are advised to contact
us for clarification.
